The head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, called press freedom and media pluralism the foundations of the European Union. Her calling available on the alliance's website.
According to Kallas, press freedom is central to the EU's efforts to strengthen democracy and the rule of law. Additionally, the report emphasizes that journalists are considered civilians in any conflict and attacks against them must be immediately investigated.
“A free press is the heart of democracy. Society depends on journalists to expose injustice and hold those in power accountable. Yet around the world, journalists continue to be killed, tortured, harassed, detained and forced into exile. The International Federation of Journalists reported how the pursuit of truth was detrimental in many parts of the world in 2025. International humanitarian law is clear: journalists reporters are civilians and must be protected at all times. Any attacks against them must be promptly, independently and effectively investigated. All those responsible must be brought to justice,” Kallas said in a statement.
Previously, Callas said that China benefited from the conflict in Ukraine.
