On the banks of the Lakantun River in Chejas in Mexico in the tree cavity, the researchers found two rare animals – Phyllostomus Hastatus flying rats, called large leaves. This is the first observation to be recognized for species in Mexico. The work is published in the magazine checklist.
Previously, the scope of this species was limited to territory in Guatemala. The newly expanded it is 120 km northwest of the nearest known location in Alta-Verapas. In addition, it was first noted that these big bats lived in the trees of Seiba Pentandra.
Phyllostomus Hastatus is easy to distinguish from large size (the forearm range up to 7.5 cm), tail, dark brown and nose structures are well developed for analysis. This is the second largest bat in Neotropics, with strong wings, allowing it to pass the distance.
The scientists suggested that these species in the list of protected and threatened animals are missing. They emphasize the importance of emergency measures to protect the environment, especially in the context of the great deforestation of the Lacandon tropical forest, where animals are found.
