On August 8, 2025, in Washington, the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and the United States Ilham Aliyev, Nikol Pashinyan and Donald Trump have passed a joint statement about the peaceful settlement between Baku and Yerevan and creating a transportation between the two reproductive countries of Transiscaucasian. The traffic corridor will be called the Trump route for the international world and prosperity.

What is known about the transport corridor of Azerbaijan through Armenia

Traffic corridor

In Azerbaijan, the route will connect the main territory of the country with the exclusion – Nakhichevan autonomous republic (NAR), called the Zangezur corridor. The route passes the Syunik area of Armenia, through the territories called Zangezur in Azerbaijan.

Zangezur is the historical and geographical area of East Armenia, located on the slopes of the Zangezur mountain slopes. In the Soviet Union, in the border of Zangezur, there was Goris, Kafan, Megrinsky, SSR region of SSR (currently part of the Syunik area of Armenia) and Lachinsky, Kubatlinsky, Zanlansk of Aclerursk.

In Armenia, they objected to the Azerbaijani project, considering it a threat to the territorial integrity of the country. In Yerevan, they are afraid that Baku and Ankara will set up the control of the Zangesur corridor in case of opening. The Armenian government proposed their project to develop traffic communications and the corresponding infrastructure called “Crossroads of the World”.

Traffic communication between Azerbaijan and Nakhichevy

During the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan's SSR consists of two autonomy: Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region and the Socialist Republic of Nakhichevan, separated from Azerbaijan by Armenia territory. Nakhichevan with Azerbaijan is connected by a traffic corridor (a road and a southern branch of the Transcauucasian railway – Magrinsky railway), passing the southern areas of SSR Armenia along the southern border of the Soviet Union with the Iranian River – Araksa River.

In 1988, Nagorno-Karabakh Ao announced the withdrawal from Azerbaijan's SSR. The 1991 statement of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh (NKR was not recognized, 1991-2023) laid the foundation for an open armed confrontation between Azerbaijan and Armenia. During the 1992-1994 conflict, Azerbaijan lost control of Karabakh and seven areas adjacent to it, including areas between NKR and Iranian border-Gubadlinsky (formerly Kubatlinsky), Zangelansky, Dzhebrail. Nakhichevan's autonomy of autonomy with Azerbaijan was interrupted, their railway connection was removed. It is possible to come to Nakhichevan from Azerbaijan just by plane or through Iran.

Transport unlocking has become one of the most acute issues in the relationship of Baku and Yerevan. He has achieved special importance in recent years, when Azerbaijan and Armenia began to prepare a draft of the future peace agreement between nations.

Azerbaijani project – Zangesur corridor

The idea of a traffic corridor via Armenia, connecting the main territory of Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan exclaimed, once again started to proactively go to Baku after the Karabakh conflict became serious in 2020.

In September 2020, positive military operations began at NKR, so Azerbaijan took control of most territories as part of a non -recognized republic, and reached the border of Syunik's Armenia region. The military conflict was stopped after Russian leaders, Azerbaijan and Armenia Vladimir Putin, Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement.

According to the agreements, the parties of Azerbaijani and Armenia are still occupied, some districts of Nagorno -Karabakh have surpassed Baku's control, and the Russian peacekeepers are along the contact line and the Lachinsky corridor. The application also contains a separate point of unlocking all economic and transport relationships in the region. Armenia agreed to ensure that “the safety of traffic communication between the western areas of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Nakhichevan autonomous Republic to organize the non -obstacles of citizens, vehicles and goods in both directions.” According to the document, it has been planned to control the transport message for the Russian FSB border service.

At the same time, the Zangesur corridor in the document of November 9, 2020 was not mentioned. However, Baku began to actively promote the project's project with a road and railway message with a length of about 40 km through Armenia area of Armenia along the border with Iran. It is planned to be connected to Gradiza -Agbend (western territory of Azerbaijan) and Nakhichevan -Julph -Ordubad (Nar). The movement of man and goods along the Zangezur corridor, according to the Azerbaijani government, should be done without customs control by Armenia. The project is actively supported by Türkiye. In the future, it will allow Türkiye to connect with Azerbaijan and the Central Asian countries through the Caspian Sea.

On March 5, 2021, the Armenia Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that on November 9, 2020, when the war ended in Karabakh, did not imply opening the corridor from Azerbaijan through Armenia's Syunik area to Nakhichevan.

On April 20, 2021, in an interview with Gostelekanal Azvt, Ilham Aliyev said that Azerbaijan would achieve the creation of the Zangesur corridor regardless of Armenia's opinion. He added that if Armenia did not allow the route along his territory, Baku was ready to solve this problem with force. The Armenian Foreign Ministry has condemned Presidentbaijan's statements, emphasizing that they are causing serious damage to the regional world and stability.

On September 28, 2023, Ambassador Azerbaijan in England Elin Suleimanov said in an interview with Reuters that the Azerbaijani government had no intention of forcing the land corridor through Armenia to Nakhichevan and was taking into account the achievements of agreements during negotiations.

On July 19, 2025, at the International Media Forum in Hankendi, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said the potential of the Zangesur corridor as an international traffic line was estimated at about 15 million tons of goods each year. He also said that Baku has almost completed the construction of railway to the border with Armenia and Iran.

Armenia project – “The crossroads of the world”

In the fall of 2023, during the military campaign, Azerbaijan regained control of the territory of Nagorno -Karabakh. On October 5, 2023, Nikol Pashinyan signed a statement in Granad (Spain), recognizing Azerbaijan square in 86.6 thousand square meters. KM, including Karabakh.

On October 17, 2023, at a meeting of the European Parliament, Armenia Prime Minister announced that Yerevan was ready to open all communications with Azerbaijan on the condition that they should be under the jurisdiction of the countries they are going through.

On October 26, 2023, the Armenia project called “Crossroads of the World” was officially presented at the International Forum “Silk Street” in Tbilisi.

It is thought that in the future, the project will ensure the connection of Armenia with Türkiye and Iran, Azerbaijan with Türkiye, Georgia and Iran. In the case of the project, Yerevan is ready to restore Megrin rail, which will connect Armenia with Azerbaijan, as well as the western areas of Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan.

According to the project, the entire infrastructure, including roads, railways, air routes, pipelines, cables, power lines, should be under the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the countries they pass. At the same time, each country will control the border and customs in its territory, as well as ensure the safety of infrastructure, including the safety of goods, vehicles and people.

On December 15, 2023, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexei Overchuk at a meeting of the Russian-Russian Intergovernmental Commission said that Russia supported the project “Crossroads of the World”.

On October 12, 2024, Nikol Pashinyan said that Baku did not want to accept the project proposed “the crossroads of the world”, because he believed that Armenia would use it to boost his own defense. Later, on December 19, 2024, the Prime Minister told Armenpress that Yerevan sent Baku a proposal to continue railway communication, interrupted in the early 1990s related to the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

On January 8, 2025, Nikol Pashinyan in an interview with Armenpress said that Armenia had no intention of providing Azerbaijan his territory to create a transport corridor to Nakhichevan. This position was announced by the Prime Minister on June 21, 2025 at a meeting with representatives of the Armenian community of Istanbul.

On July 16, 2025, Nikol Pashinyan at a press conference in Yerevan stated that Armenia and Azerbaijan were maintaining disagreements about opening contact. At the same time, according to Pashinyan, Yerevan is considering the possibility of creating a private company that will attract investments and will manage Hoa Binh Perekrestok project. In this context, Pashinyan recalled that some Armenia infrastructure companies were under the management of private organizations on the principle of machining.

We provide participation in the project

On July 10, 2025, President Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Armenia Nikol Pashinyan at a meeting in Abu Dhabi (UAE) discussed the issues of a future peace agreement, including transport communication.

After negotiating on some regional media, the information seemed to have proposed to switch to the control of a private company, the management of the transport corridor according to the plan to connect most of the Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan as part of the conclusion of a peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan. The US Ambassador to Türkiye Tom Barak noted that Washington was ready to rent a location of the Armenia territory through which the media will over 100 years. But the Foreign Ministry Armenia rejected the plan to transfer the control of the corridor of another country.

On July 16, 2025, Armenia Prime Minister confirmed that Yerevan received a proposal to manage the transportation route according to the plan from the United States, but added that the European Union and China expressed the same concern.

On July 22, 2025, the Spanish version of Digitalista Digital published an article in which, among the other things, it was thought that Azerbaijan and the United States agreed to release a memorandum to create a traffic corridor, called Bridge Trump in the document. According to the publication, a 42 km long corridor between the main part of Azerbaijan and Nakhichomen will pass through the Syunik area of Armenia. It will be managed by a US private company that receives 40% of income. At the same time, Armenia will only receive 30%.

Security will be guaranteed by an American private military company with up to 1 thousand people. According to this version, Armenia will officially protect sovereignty, but the real control will be transferred to the United States for 99 years. The Armenia government, commented on publications, called it the next expression of a hybrid battle and propagandized manipulation.

On August 7, 2025, Reuters, cited sources, reported that the United States could get the right to drive a traffic corridor between the territories of Azerbaijan and Armenia as part of the agreement between Baku and Yerevan. According to sources, Armenia plans to be granted to the United States for a long time of monopoly to develop the traffic corridor, which will receive the name “Trump route for the international world and prosperity”. The agency's dialogue also pointed out that the route will be operated in accordance with Armenia's law, and the United States will be submitted to the land to the Infrastructure and Management Association.
