In Moscow, a record amount of snow is expected in January – by the evening of January 9, the snow could be up to 65 cm high. About this in your Telegram channel stated Leading expert of the Phobos weather center Evgeny Tishkovets.
Heavy snowfall occurred in Moscow and the Moscow region due to Storm Francis. For example, in the capital, weather stations VDNH and Balchug recorded 10 mm of rain per day and 13 mm at Moscow State University. This is 20-25% compared to January norms. Snowfall was heaviest in the south and southeast of the Moscow region: 26 mm fell in Kashira (65% of standards), in Cherusty and Kolomna – 21 mm each, in Mikhailovsky – 20 mm, in Pavlovsky Posad – 19 mm.
Tishkovets is confident that this is “just the beginning” – on January 9, another 17-22 mm of rain will fall on the capital. Snow showers will continue throughout the day, peaking between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
“In the evening, snow plumes up to 65 cm high will form in Moscow, which will become the absolute record for the height of the snow cover in the entire history of regular observations in January (the previous maximum amount of snow was 57 cm)!” – said the weather forecaster.
Tishkovets added that the rainfall will only begin to weaken after 9:00 p.m., only decreasing at night and on the morning of January 10.
This expert also noted that unusual snowfall does not only happen in Moscow. They were recorded in the Kaluga, Oryol, Tula, Ryazan, Kursk, Lipetsk, Bryansk, Nizhny Novgorod and Vladimir regions.
